The objectives outlined for the present work are to compile the basic principles of coating technology in zinc and copper in the external envelope of buildings.
With the collected elements, it is intended to clarify how these metals adapt and behave as elements of roofs and facades. There are many doubts on the part of those involved in the project and on-site as to how zinc and copper are applied, namely the support materials, pendant, which thermal insulation can be used or the admissible dimensions. Furthermore, there is no information in Portugal, except commercial information, about the roof and façade systems that can be carried out.
The treatment given to this type of work is empirical, based on the experience of previous works in which the training of workers is scarce, as well as the workforce. The companies engaged in this activity are, in the majority, micro companies without the resources of specialists to deal with technical aspects, 2 physical and mechanical behavior and dimensioning. Quantifying the amount of fixtures required, analyzing part length limits due to expansion, using the proper accessories or performing a quality weld is often neglected.
Hence the idea of leaving a document that covers the basic technical issues and the study of a system. Another objective outlined is to register the contribution that these materials, zinc and copper, can make in interventions for the restoration and rehabilitation of buildings. The current perspective that the recovery of the civil construction market will be based on the rehabilitation works of buildings in the coming years, led to a reflection on the role that these materials can play in covering roofs, facades and waterproofing works.
Finally, demystify the idea that they are high-cost materials. It is true that for many years to apply zinc, and especially copper, in a work had a much higher cost than other materials with identical functions.
